Slumber

My master graduation project: A lamp that helps you fall asleep.

Introduction
A large number of people suffer from insomnia, according to some studies over 10% of the adult population in the Netherlands. I designed Slumber to combat insomnia with one of the main methods used by sleep therapists: CBT-I (Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Insomnia).

The project
Relaxation and breathing exercises are some of most commonly used tools in CBT-I. Breathing exercises physically calms practisioners by lowering their breathing- and heartrate. Slumber provides guided breathing exercises through dim light. In addition to calming users, the guiding light also provides something for users to focus on, getting them out of the negative-thought-spirals that are often associated with insomnia.
Slumber can remotely sense a user's breathing-  and heartrate using a mmWave sensor. This enables it to start interactions on its own when it detects that its user has trouble sleeping. It also uses the sensor to give subtle feedback during breathing exercises.
